Spring Mountain ...

4/10/2021

Where does one begin...
this beautiful winter design had all the elements of a November mountain elopement, cozy warmth of fireside vows, and stunning views....
but COVID had other plans, and we were informed just days ahead that we must postpone until further notice.
so we did...and then again, and again, and one more time...until we were finally able to make a plan for the first day of Spring...
so now the design had to change!!

from this design....
...to this design
winter mountain elopement design board
spring mountain wedding design board

We did it...and we were glad to do it, so we could get back out there, and create together as a team to bring this fun design to life for our attendees!
(and the winter design is still taking place November 2021!)
WE DID IT!!!!
AND THIS IS THE OUTCOME!
spring mountain wedding finished design board
These images from our lead photographer, Captured In Amber Photography , capture the essence of our design, but the day was filled with so much more.  The camaraderie of our team, building this dreamy day, and getting to know new industry friends in our attendees.

Working with Amber on this design was fate.  Amber and I have created together on many occasions, and I knew working on this design would be wonderful.  What made it fate was the twists and turns we had to navigate together to make it happen.  When one door closes...Amber opens at least two windows for me to see the light through, so thank you Amber for your wisdom and kindness above all, and of course your guidance to our attendees and the stunning images you captured along the way.

Heather of Orange Trunk Vintage Rentals setting up the table design
Robin of Avenue Beauty with our model, Jaida, finishing hair style
Rhonda of Creative Edge Flowers adding final stems to the aisle

We were so lucky to have a team that could navigate the changes in dates with us, and the attendees that were willing to change not only dates, but the design too!

three sisters mountain range in Canmore, Alberta

One thing that didn't change in our design, was these beauties here...The Three Sisters were always a mainstay for this session.

During our day together, we needed to find a way to capture all this beauty while still maintaining social distancing.  We set up multiple stations outdoors, allowing our attendees to safely photograph, and still get the guidance form our lead photographer, Amber.

romantic moment spring mountain wedding sessions in Canmore, Alberta

The design team, and vendor team came together to build this design on the lower patio at The Malcolm Hotel, Canmore.  A blank canvas in which we were to build a dreamy day, and this team did not disappoint!

floral designs by Rhonda at Creative Edge Flowers
As many of you may have guessed, Rhonda invented the term ‘go big or go home’! Her incredible floral art is nothing short of amazing, and this showcase of her work definitely makes you understand that.  From a floral aisle, floral arch, florals surrounding the love seat + cake table, the floral display for the sweetheart table, and the walking trail bridge covered in florals...it truly was a dreamy day.

Creative Edge Flowers has our hearts.

Cake design by Tanya at Cake Bake Shoppe
To say I squealed when I saw the cake for this shoot would be pretty accurate.  I cannot say enough about how much I love each vendors perspective on our design.  Creating a design idea for them to bring their art to life in is such a treat, and this cake couldn’t have been more perfect.  With the colours, the texture and the homage to our hexagon arch in the hex shapes on the cake...Tanya of Cake Bake Shoppe knocks it outta the park once again!

groom's suit by Black + Lee Menswear
We wanted to showcase a soft grey suit to make sure our colour palette wasn’t lost on our groom in a stoic black suit.  The perfect colour, with the paisley tie with hints of pale yellow was just what we needed to make this happen.  Thank you Black + Lee Menswear for trusting our vision.

wedding gown by Durand Bridal
Lets talk about this stunning gown from the team at Durand Bridal!  We knew this was the gown the second we saw our model, Jaida in it at her fitting.  It had all the romance of this spring wedding design, and perfectly suited to our garden patio wedding.

engagement ring by alberta diamond exchange
Alberta Diamond Exchange is our go to for beautiful engagement rings for all of our designs, and this workshop is no exception.  In this particular case, our couple have the same taste in engagement ring creators, as Jamie proposed to Jaida with a stunning ring from ADX, and you will see her actual ring throughout the gallery.

stationery suite by Pink Umbrella Designs
Creating a design in the Alberta Rocky Mountains calls for a stationery suite by Pink Umbrella Designs.  Shanna creates a beautiful array of paper goods to use in our flat lays, for props for our couple, and even table menus.  Always a treat to have Shanna’s beautiful art on set with us.

flat lay styling kits by Curated Kits
Speaking of flat lays, we couldn’t make all these beautiful flat lays stand out without the help of the styling pieces provided by Curated Kits.  From styling mats + trays; accent styling cloths + ribbons, to tiny details like vintage postage stamps...no detail is overlooked!

vintage pendant ambient lighting by Coven Creative
One of the best things I’ve ever done is ask Kriya her ideas for a design I’m working on.  Her work ethic is only outshined by her enthusiasm to create, and we are here for it.  The lighting on the arch for this design is all her, but so is the production assistance in creating a day like this.  She works tirelessly to make our entire team look good.  Thank you for bringing Coven Creative into our design world!

bridal jewelry pieces by Joanna Bisley Designs
When we are looking for those special details to add, so our attendees have all their bases covered when showing off their portfolios...Joanna Bisley Designs is our top pick.  Her beautiful jewelry lines and coordinating hair vines + combs are always a treat for our attendees to capture.
I'm especially in love with this piece ~ the Heather hair comb.

hair and makeup by Robin of Avenue Beauty
The style that Robin of Avenue Beauty brings to the table of our shoot design is to bring out the natural beauty of our models.  She not only creates the overall style of our model’s appearance, but she takes care of the model details of the day.  Jewelry to lip gloss.  Helping the dress to lay just so, to placing the curl in just the right spot for a detail shot.  Her attention to those details is what makes Robin a key element to our workshop and styled shoot days.

hexagon arch and vintage furniture rentals by Orange Trunk Vintage Rentals
I may be a bit biased here, but this design really came together when I realized I could bring in our hexagon arch to the lower patio at the hotel.  Changing the design to a sweetheart table rather than an 8 seater also allowed us to bring in the love seat and cake table ideas...what a treat!  Designing with our vintage rentals is so fun, and we can’t wait to show you what we are working on next.

Picture
To our amazing models.  Our real life couple who make us all warm and fuzzy to see how they look at each other, support each other, and their cute little smiles to one another just light up a room.  Thank you J + J for allowing us to spend the day with you, and to capture your love.

Picture
Lunch is served!  Yes, we feed our attendees...they need sustenance to keep up their strength for these high level content days.  Many thanks to the staff at The Stirling Grill Lounge for not only providing us with a lunch, but to help us stay covid safe with individually packed lunches, and to give us a boost of warmth and energy with those delicious cookies as a late afternoon treat.  And for this stunning meal for our design!!

walking bridge portraits at Malcolm Hotel, Canmore, Alberta
The The Malcolm Hotel Canmore staff were incredible to work with as we had many changes due to covid restrictions.  They went above and beyond even providing us with a liaison, Jacob, to make our stay on site seamless.  A huge thanks to Kate, who was integral in making this day a reality for our team and attendees.

walking bridge in Canmore, Alberta

Many thanks to each of our vendors of course for bringing this design to life, but also to our attendees who support and encourage the workshop series.  It is so appreciated, and we cannot thank you enough.
I am looking forward to many more sessions this season, and cannot wait to get back to creating with you all as soon as possible.

ahhhhh....so I did a thing!
I've had ideas, photos, fonts, and all other things piling up on my desktop for MONTHS friends!  Couldn't delete them, but they also weren't truly speaking to what I had envisioned for our logo and over all brand design...until this

A spring mini refresh of our brand.

wild rose wedding workshop logo + colour concept

As many of you know, I have started a little brand for myself called Heather Johnston Creative, that allows me to showcase more of my design inspirations, and the ideas I have in the wedding industry and beyond...so I set to work with this idea, found exactly what sings to my soul, and created this fresh, clean, modern, yet old school, romantic yet mood enhancing design.

I'm so happy to apply this to the website and all the upcoming styled shoot inspirations we have coming up this season!
I hope you love it too!

groom's styled flat lay...

What do you use in a groom's flat lay?

flat lay of grooms wedding day essentials

There is a lot of emphasis on stationery flat lays, and the groom's stuff often gets left un-photographed!
Mostly, because we don't know where to start, and what to use in a groom's flat lay!
I wanna change that friends!
flat lay of grooms wedding day essentials

Many wedding planners/stylists + photographers carry a predesigned styling kit for wedding day convenience.  But does your kit include any groom specific items?

flat lay of grooms wedding day essentials

Styling kit items such as a watch box, tie clip, ring box, flask, pocket watch and ribbon for boutonniere to have on hand in case the groom doesn't provide you with anything personal.

flat lay of grooms wedding day essentials

A tip from our photographer friends...ask your couples for a shoebox of styling items for their flat lays, including an invitation and some spare florals!

flat lay of grooms wedding day essentials

Items to include in a groom's flat lay:
tie or bow tie, cufflinks, socks, suspenders or belt, shoes, watch, ring, and any personal items that mean a lot to the groom on his wedding day.

flat lay of grooms wedding day essentials

Items to have in any styling kit for flat lays:
styling blocks, a basic backdrop cloth or board or a styling mat, a generic ring box you can use for bride or groom.

Tip: always ask your couples about adding a flask or alcohol to their flat lays.  Don't assume they are drinkers!

I hope you found this topic helpful to your flat lay styling for the grooms!

Many thanks to Melanie of Grey Lily Photography for providing the images for this blog, and to Lowell at Ed Williams Menswear for providing the items to style with.  You can find pre-designed styling kits or build your own styling kits at Curated Kits.

We look forward to getting back in a room with our industry friends to create more beautiful flat lay designs.  Until then, we will write blogs about it, and look further into hosting an online flat lay styling workshop.

We are so sad to have to make the decision to postpone our Mountain Elopement Session that was due to take place this weekend in beautiful Canmore, Alberta!

Picture

We have the most wonderful team of vendors + attendees and each and every one of them are so important to us.  So we must make the decision that will keep everyone safe + healthy.

Picture

The team at The Malcolm in Canmore has gone above and beyond to make our stay with them top notch, and we are so excited to be heading here in the new year to create this magical day with them.

Picture

So, watch for details on the new date!
Our current attendees will be the first to know of the date we choose!

Hopefully we will have lighter restrictions by then, and we can allow for a few more attendees to join us...it's sure to be a brilliant day!

Thank you

Our first Styled Shoot Class was held this past week!
What a treat to spend a day talking all things styled shoots!!

As a little surprise, we created a fun autumn vibes content shoot for our attendees to enjoy.

Having to reschedule our first class due to covid was a bummer, but I am a firm believer in fate, and I think it was meant to be that we celebrated on this perfect fall day together.

mobile bar styled for fall for styled shoot class

Styled shoots can be daunting, and most of us have had our fair share of knocks when it comes to planning one, or even getting one off the ground.  This class is here to help and to guide you to produce a quality styled wedding photo shoot for your business.

styled vintage truck for fall

We educate wedding vendors on the HOW TO  and the INSIGHT to get there.
But the WHY...that comes from you.
cookie treats on place setting
One of our attendees notices a lack of her style in the blogs and what is prominently featured.  This is a great reason to produce your own styled shoot.
The saying ' dress for the job you have' can be said for what you show in your portfolio as well.  If you are a particular style of design or photography, and you don't see enough of that being featured...its a great idea to produce your own!

personal grazing boxes for fall styled picnic table

Trends and styles come and go.  Publishers share what is trendy.
And lets not forget that publishers are fed content from wedding vendors wanting to be seen in that format.  They are likely inundated with content actually, so be the light in someone's pile of paper work and send them your quality styled wedding shoot to share with the world.

I'm really looking forward to hosting another styled shoot class!
Many thanks to the vendors who helped create this fun day.

Special Thanks to Melanie of Grey Lily Photography, who not only supported my
crazy 'lets do a mini shoot' idea, but photographed it so beautifully, AND helped me
with the class, as she graciously offered the point of view of a photographer in
regards to her own experience with styled shoots.

To our Lovely venue host, The Glenmore Sailing Club.  A treat to get a
chance to play in your space is always fun.
Thank you!!!

Huge shout out to Jordan + Emily of  Holy Spirits Bar for joining us for such
a beautiful fall day of decor and styling with your mobile bar and your vintage truck.
Thank you!!!

All the props to my friend Stephanie with Floral + Field, who was just trying to
attend a class, but agreed to help style the fall mini content shoot with us!
Thank you!!!

If you have a chance to try the grazing boxes by Brie + Banquet, DO IT!
BIG thanks to Katie for bringing boxes for our content shoot, but also for feeding
our on site vendors before the class began!
Thank you!!!

Chelsea, of Black Dog Bakery, also just wanting to learn more about styled shoots,
offered the sweetest of treats to the content shoot, but also to all
of our attendees in their welcome bags!
Thank you!!!

We have some serious support in this industry, and they want to support you too.
Our friends at Confetti Wedding Magazine gave a couple of magazines
to all of our attendees.
Our friend Sam at Mountain Grove Studios gave each attendee a lovely
hand lettered name tag.
Our friend Lara of Lamb's Soap Works gave each of our attendees a
cold brew coffee soap in their welcome bags.

My heart is full!

Thanks

festival vibes + desert weddings...

Designing a styled shoot is not about the designer...it is about the vendors!
A wise friend told me that just the other day.  I have learned so much in this industry from her, and I keep learning with every conversation!

A desert shoot...with festival vibes...YES PLEASE!
I'll be honest here...I had a Pinterest board full of rad ideas for this style of design...but an opportunity to work with a real couple and their wedding team in Drumheller really got this desert festival design going!

bridal portrait session vendors...

The vendors are the backbone of any styled shoot.
Nothing happens without the vendors coming together to bring life to the ideas we have!

When I was designing the fine art wedding session, there were so many ideas I was hoping to accomplish for our attendees to get a full experience.  Of course those lofty dreams of mine have to be reigned in every once in a while, and I am gently reminded by my peers that we can do another shoot...haha!

I do believe we created a dream on this day...and I am so proud of our vendor team for dreaming big with me, and helping to create a magical day for our attendees.

dreamy milk glass lighting fine art portraiture session

This stunning scene is brought to you by the insanely talented Kriya Preisler of Coven Creative.
I knew I wanted a french blue sofa in this scene, but it was Kriya who suggested we use the fig trees at the venue.  Her white milk-glass pendants hung from above, with the softest glow, perfectly accentuating the details of the venue, the sofa and our model.  Kriya also provided production assistance at every turn, and I honestly could not have done this day without her!

The hair and makeup team from Bellamore Beauty created a soft, romantic style for our model Nicole Ronsky.  A vintage style chandelier earring by Joanna Bisley Designs was the perfect piece to top off the look of this bride.

The gown...oh my!
The beautiful, flowy soft ruffles, the sleeves that drape so perfectly...exactly what we had in
mind for this design.  All the romance for this session friends.

The venue is a stunning space to design portraiture photography details in.
From the indoor greenhouses, the garden arbours, the vast scenery from the outlook, and lanes leading to countryside beauty.  What more could anyone dream of!
Thank you to Saskatoon Berry Farm in the rural foothills of Alberta for allowing us to dream
